Sharon presents timetable for pullout

JERUSALEM, Aug. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Tuesday presented an accelerated Gaza pullout timetable to lawmakers of his ruling Likud party, local Ha'aretz daily reported.

Sharon said he will deliver the main legal provisions of his controversial project to the cabinet on Sept. 14 and expected parliament to approve it on Nov. 3.

The formula, according to a government source, sets the evacuation starting from the beginning of next year, advancing the original schedule by about eight months.

On Monday, Sharon told his cabinet ministers that he wants to evacuate all Gaza Strip settlements at one time instead of in stages.

Despite internal disputes, the cabinet agreed on the proposal, but insisted that it will not supersede the government's June 6 decision to adopt the disengagement plan with a government discussion and vote ahead of actual implementation.   According to Sharon's plan as approved in June, the 21 Gaza settlements are to be removed in three stages by the end of September 2005. Four small West Bank settlements are also to be evacuated.

On Aug. 18, Sharon suffered a setback in his Likud party as a non-binding vote rejected his plan to invite the main opposition Labor party into a coalition government in a bid to rally support for the disengagement plan.

The prime minister however seems resolved to stick to his plan regardless of difficulties.

"You know my views on the subject," Sharon told Likud legislators. "The disengagement plan will be implemented, that's it."  Enditem
