    ATHENS, Aug. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Stefano Baldini of Italy overtook Brazilian Vanderlei de Lima two kilometers from the finish to win the Olympic men's marathon on Sunday.

    The former European champion clocked two hours, 10 minutes and 55 seconds, six minutes outside the world record and 94 seconds slower than the 20-year-old Olympic mark.

    In a bizarre incident, De Lima was pushed to the roadside crowdby a lunging spectator seeking instant fame while the Brazilian was leading at the 36km mark. The runner survived the clash but his lead was reduced to seven seconds.

    Clearly shaken, the Brazilian ran back on the course and finished the distance from Marathon to the Panathinaiko stadium in2:12.11 for the bronze medal.

    American Mebrahtom Keflezighi picked up the silver in 2:11:29.

    On the last day of the Olympics, Cuba proved its prowess in amateur boxing.

    Lightweight Mario Kindelan and bantamweight Guillermo Rigondeaux claimed their second straight gold medals, raising the country's boxing haul to five.

    Yan Bhjarelemy Varela was one of Cuba's three boxing winners for the day, beating Turkey's Atagun Yalcinkaya in the light flyweight.

    The Caribbean island nation also won a wrestling title through Miguel Quintana, who grappled down Iran's Masuod Jokar in the men's 60kg freestyle.

    American light heavyweight Andre Ward subdued Belarus' Magomed Aripgadjiev for the U.S. first boxing gold in eight years.

    Russian Alexander Povetkin took the super heavyweight gold without breaking a sweat after Egypt's Mohamed Aly failed a medical test hours before their bout.

    Kazakhstan's Bakhtiyar Artayev landed the welterweight crown with a 36-26 win over Cuban Lorenzo Aragon Armenteros.

    Iran's Ali Reza Heidari denied the United States its first freestyle wrestling medal, defeating Daniel Cormier 3-2 in a 96kg replay of in last year's world championships.

    Russian Buvaysa Saytiev took the 74kg division, nipping Gennadiy Laliyev from Kazakhstan.

    The Brazilian men's volleyball team proved its No. 1 world ranking with a gold-medal finish Sunday, beating Italy in the volleyball final.

    Gilberto Godoy Filho, named the tournament's most valuable player, scored 20 points to lead the Brazilians to a 25-16, 24-26,25-20, 25-22 victory.

    Russia routed the United States 25-22, 27-25, 25-16 for the bronze.

    Denmark lifted its third consecutive Olympic title in women's handball, defeating South Korea 4-2 in penalty throws after a 34-34 tie at the end of two overtime periods.

    On Saturday, Ukraine beat France 21-18 for the bronze.

    A goal from Gergely Kiss sealed 8-7 victory for defending Olympic and world champion Hungary in the Olympic men's water polofinal against Serbia and Montenegro.

    Earlier Revaz Chomakhidze netted four goals in Russia's 6-5 winover Greece in the bronze play-off.

    Defending champion Chen Zhong of China took the taekwondo women's over-67kg category.

    Chen disposed of French opponent Myriam Baverel in the final, scoring six points in the last round to run out a 12-5 winner.

    It was the 32nd gold medal for China, which has its best ever finish.

    South Korean Moon Dae-Sung triumphed in the men's over 80kg taekwondo final. The silver medal went to Alexandros Nikolaidis of Greece and the bronze to Pascal Gentil of France.

    Russian beauty Alina Kabaeva, two-time world champion, won the rhythmic gymnastics all-around with 108.400 points, more than a point ahead of silver medalist Irina Tchachina of Russia.

    Anna Bessonova of Ukraine took the bronze.
