KABUL, Aug. 29 (Xinhuanet)-- Five people were killed and six foreigners, three of them women, were injured in an explosion in central Kabul at around 5:45 p.m. local time Sunday, according to official sources.

A dozen Afghans were also said to be injured in the explosion.

All the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. However, an officer who refused to be named said one American was among the dead.

According to witnesses, a charred skeleton of a car can be seen in the street, and it is thought to be planted one or several bombs by unidentified people.

General Baba Jan, security commander of the capital, said earlier the explosion was triggered by a carbomb in front of an American guesthouse, and one person was killed on the spot and a number of others were injured.

The target, the guesthouse, used to be frequented by foreigners, mostly Americans, was still on fire. Firefighters were hurrying putting out the flame. A Chinese restaurant that was 50 m away was shattered, many house items inside were damaged. The target was near the Interior Ministry, and flames can be seen at the site.

Earlier in the day, foreign sources warned that there might be some attack in the city, and foreigners were warned to stay home. It was the latest bomb attack on the relatively calm capital. The first post-Taliban presidential polls were rescheduled to take place on Oct. 9. The remnants of the Taliban have threatened to kill the voting around the country. Enditem
