Russia shine in wrestling on last day of Athens Olympics

    ATHENS, Aug. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Russia, the traditional powerhouse in wrestling, clinched two of the three wrestling gold medals up for grab on Sunday, the last day of the Athens Olympics.

    Russian star wrestler Buvaysa Saytiev, a five-time world champion, eased to win the men's 74kg freestyle gold.

    Saytiev, 29, the gold medalist of the Atlanta Olympics, routed Gennadiy Laliyev from Kazakhstan, the bronze medalist of the Sydney Olympics, 7-0 in the final.

    Saytiev had also been crowned as European champion in 2000 and 2001. He was named the Freestyle Wrestler of the Year by the International Wrestling Federation in 1996 and 1998.

    Cuban Ivan Fundora, the twice Pan American champion in 2003 and2004, beat Krystian Brzozowski from Poland, who finished fourth inthe 2004 European Championships, 3-1 to take the bronze.

    Russian Khadjimourat Gatsalov grabbed the men's 96kg freestyle gold, beating Magomed Ibragimov from Uzbekistan 4-1 in the final.

    This was the last gold medal of the 18-gold wrestling competition at the Athens Olympic Games which would conclude this evening.

    Russia collected altogether five gold, two silver and three bronze medals in the 14-men, 4-women events wrestling competition in Athens, topping the medal standing, followed by Japan 2-1-3 andUzbekistan 2-1-0.

    The freestyle 96kg bronze medal went to Iranian Alireza Heidari,the sliver medalist of the 2003 worlds, who edged American Daniel Cormier, who finished fifth in the 2003 worlds, 3-2.

    In men's 60kg freestyle final this afternoon, Cuban Miguel Quintana thrashed Iranian Masuod Jokar 4-0.

    In the bronze-medal fight, Japanese Kenji Inoue edged Vasyl Fedoryshyn from Ukraine, the silver medalist of European championships, 6-5. Enditem
