Iranian military officer reiterates "deterrent policy"

TEHRAN, Aug. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- An Iranian officer Sunday reiterated Iran's "deterrent policy", saying it has enabled the country to impose its position on the enemies under any condition, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"Despite earmarking a small military budget, the Islamic Republic of Iran enjoys a high deterrent capability and national security," Masoud Jazayeri, head of public relations office of the Islamic Revolution's Guards Corps, was quoted as saying. "We are able now to impose our deterrent policy on the enemy at any arena," he said.

"This capability has been achieved through exploiting the invaluable experience of the eight-year war against Iraq and giving high prominence to the software movement and new generation of science in the country's armed forces," Jazayeri added.

Iranian Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani said Saturday Iran had now achieved an "effective deterrent power" to confront its enemies in the region.

The Islamic Republic said earlier this month it carried out a successful test firing of an upgraded version of its Shahab-3 medium-range ballistic missile.

Military experts have said the missile is capable of striking Israel or any other enemy target in the region. Tensions between Iran and Israel as well as the United States have been accelerated recently.

The United States and Israel, accusing Iran of developing nuclear weapons secretly, threatened to launch a surprising attack upon Iran's atomic power plant in Bushehr.

On Aug. 18, Brigadier General Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, deputy commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, warned Iran will strike Israel's nuclear reactor at Dimona if Israel's threat were materialized. Enditem
