ATHENS, Aug. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Atagun Yalcinkaya failed to show signs of the brilliance from his former bouts in the Olympic boxing tournament here on Sunday, losing 21-16 to Yan Bhartelemy Varela of Cuba in the championship bout of the light flyweight class event.
The 17-year-old Turkish had ruled out world champion Sergey Kazakov's gold request after beating the Russian southpaw 26-20 inFriday's semifinals, while Bhartelemy Varela had to work hard to beat World Championships silver medallist Zou Shiming of China.
Bhartelemy trailed 4-2 in the first round, but came back with acombination of left swings and hooks in the second, up to 11-8 after the second round.
The Turkish couldn't catch up with the fast-paced Cuban southpaw, losing 5-4 in each of the following two rounds.
"I'm sorry I lost, but it would be a good experience in the Olympics," said the youngest Olympic medalist of Turkey.
"Yalcinkaya is a strong opponent but I proved to be better," said Bhartelemy.
"I will continue boxing and my aim is to win more Olympic medals in the future," he added.
Yuriorkis Camboa Toledano has won the first boxing gold for Cuba in the Athens Olympics as he overcame former world champion Jerome Thomas of France 38-23 in Saturday's flyweight (51kg) final.
Twice world champion Odlanier Solis Fonte then added a second to the Caribbean amateur boxing powerhouse in the heavyweight (91kg) division.
Cuba, having won 27 Olympic golds since 1972, was widely expected to beat the four gold medals they won from the last two Games, as three of their fighters emerged favorites in other categories finals to be decided Sunday afternoon.
Zou Shiming of China claimed a light flyweight bronze, which isthe ever first medal of China in the Olympic boxing tournament, ashe lost to Bhartelemy Varela 29-17 in the semis.
Sergey Kazakov also settled for a bronze after losing 26-20 to Yalcinkaya on Friday. Enditem |
