BAGHDAD, Aug. 26
(Xinhuanet) - Iraq's interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, in a statement, issued
a last call for peace on Thursday in holy city of Najaf, promising Sadr militia
amnesty if they leave the holy shrine in the city
peacefully.
Sadr's Mehdi Army fighters would be offered an
amnesty if they gave up their weapons and agreed to leave peacefully from the
Imam Ali shrine, the holiest Shiite mosque in Iraq where they are holed up,
Allawi said in the statement.
"This is our last call for
peace and this is the last chance to put an end to the innocent bloodshed," he
said.
"We will ensure a safe passage for Moqtada Sadr if he
decides to stop the armed struggle," added the prime
minister.
Najaf witnessed fierce battles between US-backed
Iraqi government forces and Shiite militiamen loyal to radical cleric
moqtada al-Sadr for three weeks. Enditem |
