ATHENS, Aug. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- World champion Serbia and Montenegro beat
Angola 85-62 here on Tuesday for a disappointing 11th finish at the Athens
Olympic men's basketball tournament.
It's the worst ever performance for the traditional basketball powerhouse,
who finished with two wins and four losses in Athens, at Olympic Games.
"The days that have just gone past will remain forever in our memory as the
worst basketball experience we have ever had," said SCG team manager Zarko
Paspalj. "We need to start thinking on how we can improve this team's
performance."
Captain Dejan Bodiroga was also disappointed with his team's lackluster
performance.
"We are not satisfied with ourselves," said Bodiroga. "You don't need to be
a philosopher to see that we should have qualified with the players that have in
our team."
Vlade Divac and Predrag Stojakovic, the biggest names of Serbiaand
Montenegro, have withdrawn from the Athens Olympics.
"It is too early to come to any conclusions," Bodiroga added. "Everything
will become clearer in the next few years."
Vlado Scepanovic came from the bench to score 18 points to lead Serbia and
Montenegro and Milos Vujanic and Nenad Krstic added 16 and 15 points
respectively.
Valter Monteiro scored game-high 26 points for Angola, who finished bottom
of the 12-team tournament with six straight defeats. Enditem |
