Li, 23, has collected 13 gold medals in the Olympic Games and the World Championships. If he could get one gold in Athens, he would have tied the record of 14 titles cherished by his Chinese gymnastics legend Li Ning.

Before coming to Athens, the Chinese fans and media pinned great hope on Li to even bring back three gold medals in the men'steam, vault and parallel bars, after he won two golds of the team and parallel bars at the Sydney Olympics and three golds of the team, parallel bars and vault at the 2003 Anaheim Worlds.

Yet, Athens proved not to be his wonderland.
