ATHENS, Aug. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- New Zealand twin sisters Georgina and Caroline Evers-Swindells, 2003 Milan world champions, bagged their first ever Olympic gold in women's double sculls rowing hereon Saturday.

World championships silver medalists, Peggy Waleska and Britta Oppelt of Germany, took the silver. Sarah Winckless and Elise Laverick of Britain, ranked second in 2004 Munich World Cup, won the bronze.

Unbeaten in every international race since 2002, the New Zealand sisters had a clear and impressive win in their debut in an Olympic Games.

"It was a very fast race. We had a lot of pressure from Germany and Britain. We made our target, we worked hard for this for a long time. It's fantastic, we won the gold medal." Georgina said.

Coached by New Zealand's head coach, Richard Tonks, the twins were happy to know their hard training in their home country paid off.

When talking of their family, Georgina said, "They stood by us.I can't wait to be back home."

There was no future certainty for the sisters as Georgina said,"We'll rest for a few weeks, then we'll see." Enditem
