ATHENS, Aug. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- New Zealand twin sisters Georgina and
Caroline Evers-Swindells, 2003 Milan world champions, bagged their first ever
Olympic gold in women's double sculls rowing hereon Saturday.
World championships silver medalists, Peggy Waleska and Britta Oppelt
of Germany, took the silver. Sarah Winckless and Elise Laverick of Britain,
ranked second in 2004 Munich World Cup, won the bronze.
Unbeaten in every international race since 2002, the New Zealand sisters
had a clear and impressive win in their debut in an Olympic Games.
"It was a very fast race. We had a lot of pressure from Germany and
Britain. We made our target, we worked hard for this for a long time. It's
fantastic, we won the gold medal." Georgina said.
Coached by New Zealand's head coach, Richard Tonks, the twins were happy to
know their hard training in their home country paid off.
When talking of their family, Georgina said, "They stood by us.I can't wait
to be back home."
There was no future certainty for the sisters as Georgina said,"We'll rest
for a few weeks, then we'll see." Enditem |
