KAMPALA, Aug. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Kenyan lawmakers from the defense and foreign relations committee at the parliament are visiting Uganda with aim at disarming cattle rustling and stopping the illegal small arms trade along their common borders, reported The New Vision newspaper on Friday.
On Wednesday, Simon Mayende, chairperson of Uganda's parliament committee
on defense, chaired a meeting with Kenyan legislators.
Five Kenyan MPs who arrived in Uganda on Sunday, agreed with their Ugandan
counterparts to hold joint meetings along the borders of the two countries to
address the issue of cattle rustling, small arms trade and common problems
affecting local people living along the borders.
Mayende said when Kenyan and Ugandan MPs visit each other's country, they
will understand intimately the problems facing local people.
He was hopeful the meetings would bring pressure on the executives of the
two countries to take action on insecurity and problems affecting the border
people.
Godfrey Kariuki, chairperson of Kenya's defense and foreign relations
committee, said stopping the small arms trade required knowing the sources of
guns, adding that guns were coming from neighboring nations like Somalia, Sudan
and Ethiopia. Enditem
