KABUL, Aug. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- The United Nations has temporarily ceased its road missions in western Afghanistan as the factional clash is going on in the region, the spokesman of UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said Sunday.
"As a result of the tension, all the UN road missions in the region are temporarily suspended," Manoel de Almeida e Silva told reporters here.
However, the movement of UN staff within Herat city depends on the situation, he added.
The western Herat province, bordering Iran, has been the scene of factional fighting, killing at least 30 people, between the Herat's governor Ismael Khan and some military commanders for the last two weeks.
Residents in Herat through holding peaceful demonstrations havebeen calling for peace in the region, the witness said.
The Afghanistan's central government as part of its efforts to calm down the situation has decided to deploy three battalions of 150 troops in the region, leaving this morning for Herat.
Meanwhile, Afghan Interior Ministry is going to deploy two battalions of national police in the conflict-hit areas to controlthe situation. Enditem
