KHARTOUM, Aug. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Sudan's President Omar el-Bashirre affirmed Saturday that the government forces were able to end the 18-month conflict and restore security and stability in Darfur.

"We are capable of reining in the sedition in Darfur and restoring security and social peace and maintaining the country's unity and sovereignty," said Bashir in a national radio address to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Sudan's armed forces.

Meanwhile, Bashir slammed the "plotters" and "enemies" behind the crisis in Darfur, saying that unnamed "enemies feel sad with any accomplishment achieved by Sudan and intensify their conspiracies against the country."

"They kindled clashes in Darfur so as to deny Sudan the fruits of peace and contribution by the international community in the region affected by the war," he added.

The Sudanese government has been accused of backing Arab militiamen, known as the Janjaweed to attack African rebel groupsin Darfur, which was strongly denied by Khartoum.

Darfur is considered the site of the worst humanitarian crisis by the United Nations.

The region has witnessed an 18-month conflict between the Janjaweed and two African rebel groups, with over 10,000 people killed and 1 million people displaced.

The UN Security Council passed a resolution on July 30, giving the Sudanese government 30 days to disarm the Janjaweed or face international sanctions.

On Saturday, Bashir, the commander-in-chief of the Sudanese armed forces, promoted himself from lieutenant general to the rankof field marshall.

He inspected a large military parade in the capital on the 50th anniversary of the army's founding.

The celebrations were also attended by visiting Egyptian Defense Minister Mohammad Hussein Tantawi and top brass from Libya and Kuwait.  Enditem
