BRASILIA, Aug. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- The Brazilian ruling Worker's Party announced that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will campaign for re-election in 2006, the local media reported on Friday.
Local media said the Worker's Party has reached a consensus to elect Lula as the presidential candidate. The accelerating economic growth and rising employment will give Lula more opportunities to win the re-election.
The latest poll released on Tuesday showed that Lula's popularity jumped from 29.4 percent in June to 38.2 percent in August, the first rise this year. Most of the interviewees are satisfied with the economic, educational and welfare policies.
Brazil is the largest economic power in Latin America. After three years of economic downturn, the Brazilian economy is starting to run on full steam in the fields of the production, consumption, employment and exports. Gross domestic product will increase by 4 percent, higher than expected.
Lula won the election with an overwhelming majority in October 2002 and became Brazil's first working class president. Enditem |
