HARARE, Aug. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Uganda's candidate for the World Health Organization (WHO) post of Regional Director for Africa Francis Omaswa said here on Thursday he could lead the regiona
l office.
"I am convinced that I can make a contribution to the regional office,"
Omaswa told the press soon after meeting President RobertMugabe in the capital.
"I have an international status, stature and a track record that speaks for
itself," he said.
Omaswa was accompanied by Ugandan special envoy, Ali Kurunda Kivejinya, who
also commended Omaswa as the suitable candidate forthe job.
"Uganda has not done badly in the health sector and our candidate Omaswa is
behind all the success in the sector," he said.
The two met President Mugabe to solicit Zimbabwe's support for the world
body's top post in Africa.
Omaswa is the current director general of the Health Services and
previously held appointments at Makerere University, the Ministry of Health and
is a member of many management boards.
The Ugandan government describes Omaswa as a man of integrity and immense
experience, and believes that the successes he has achieved in Uganda and at the
international level can be replicated throughout Africa.
Incumbent WHO Regional Director for Africa, Ibrahim Samba, has retired and
elections to choose a new regional director are due onAug. 30 this year. Enditem
