BAGHDAD, Aug. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Several Mortar bombs and rockets hitcentral Baghdad late Sunday at around 8:00 p.m. (1600GMT), killing one child and wounding eight people, witnesses and medical sources said.
Witnesses said that two mortar shells fell near the BaghdadHotel in the Saadun neighborhood in central Baghdad, which is usedby foreigners, killing a boy and wounding some seven passers-by.Black smoke rose over the area from two cars that caught fire bythe bombs as they were driving by at the time.
Almost at the same time of the mortar attack, a rocket also hitinto a furniture showroom in a central Baghdad commercial street,wounding one person and causing extensive damage to the shop.After the attacks sirens blared at the nearby Green Zone, aheavily guarded complex housing the Iraq interim government and theUS and British embassies.
In the past 15-month of post-war violence, Iraqi insurgents havealmost daily fired mortars at hotels and the Green Zone in Baghdadafter sundown. Enditem
