76 Chinese cockle pickers rescued
www.chinaview.cn 2004-08-08 15:40:40

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Two tractors carrying cockle pickers have collided at the Morecambe Bay in Britain, trapping some 136 people.

One tractor carried 60 Scots, while 76 Chinese were in the other tractor, reported CRI online Sunday.

It took rescuers more than three hours on Saturday to get all the involved safely back to shore. Currently, those people are reported to be in good condition.

The spokesman for the Liverpool coastguard brigade says it is the 16th time they have conducted rescue operation for commercial cocklers this year.

This February, 21 Chinese tourists were drowned after being trapped by the rising tide while searching for cockles off the north-west coast of England.
