7 killed in Colombian clashes
www.chinaview.cn 2004-08-08 12:07:19

BOGOTA, Aug. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- The Colombian army and guerrilla groups clashed in Huila department, southwest of the country, leaving at least seven people dead, local media reported Saturday.

The Commander of the 9th Army Brigade, colonel Juan Rodriguez, confirmed the clashes, saying the encounter took place Friday night at the rural area of Baraya municipality.

The killed were members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), Rodriguez said, but he did not say whether the army suffered any casualties.

The FARC, with 17,000 combatants, is the largest rebel group in Colombia and it has been involved in the four-decade-old civil war in the country.

About 3,500 people were killed every year in the civil war that pits government forces, leftist guerrillas and far-right paramilitaries against one another.  Enditem
