Mortar bombs wound five in central Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Aug. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- At least five people were wounded when two mortar bombs rattled central Baghdad on Saturday, security sources said.

Two Iraqi security members and three civilians were wounded in the attack when one mortar bomb hit a checkpoint outside the Iraqi Olympic Committee (IOC) offices as students were queuing to apply for the sport education college, the sources from the Facility Protection Service said.

The other mortar bomb fell inside the so-called Green Zone in central Baghdad, where the interim Iraqi government and the US embassy were based.

The IOC offices were located outside the Green Zone, near the Iranian embassy in the capital.

The Green Zone has been a frequent target by insurgents since the US-led war to oust the former Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein started in March 2003.  Enditem
