Peru defuses tensions with Chile over border
www.chinaview.cn 2004-08-07 10:14:09

SANTIAGO, Aug. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Peruvian Foreign Minister Manuel Rodriguez has defused tensions between his country and Chile by saying that the 1929 Treaty that has set borders between Chile, Peru and Bolivia is "perpetual."

Rodriguez made the remarks when meeting his Chilean counterpart Soledad Alvear, the La Tercera reported Friday.

Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo had told the Bolivian press that Peru was negotiating with Chile a revision of the 1929 Treaty.

Toledo's remarks drew strong protest from Chile, which said Toledo was "ill informed."

In reaction to the protest, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry had issued a statement Wednesday night saying "there can not be any dialogue to revise the 1929 Treaty."

Earlier, Peruvian Defense Minister Roberto Chiabra had said Peru's armed forces were prepared for a conflict with Chile. Chile also conducted a military drill near its border with Peru onThursday. Enditem
