BAGHDAD, Aug. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- A total of 19 Iraqis had been killed and 111 wounded in clashes in Baghdad's Sadr City district between Shiite militiamen and Iraqi police backed by US troops since early Thursday, Iraq's Health Ministry said on Friday.

Meanwhile, medical sources in Sadr General Hospital said at least 26 people were killed and 90 others wounded in clashes in the Shiite neighborhood.

According to the sources, 18 bodies had been brought in and 73 wounded, including two women and four children, were receiving medical treatment in the hospital.

Another eight bodies and 17 wounded were sent to al-Chuwader hospital, the sources said, adding that two other hospitals had received 10 wounded people.

Earlier on Friday, the US military said that 15 US soldiers were injured in a six-hour clash between US troops and Shiite militiamen in Baghdad.

Fighters from Mehdi Army loyal to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadrhave been battling multinational forces in southern Iraq and Baghdad's Sadr City, the stronghold of Mehdi militiamen in the capital, since Thursday. Enditem
