WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States said on Wednesday that Pakistan was cooperating on the war against terrorism and there was no question that Pakistan had changed its policy.
"There is no question that Pakistan has changed its policy and is determined to rout out the elements of training or support or any other sort of safe haven that terrorists might be getting in Pakistan," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said at a news briefing.
"We have seen them taking concerted and difficult actions. We have seen loss of life among Pakistani soldiers involved in this fight. And we have worked closely with them and continue to support them and continue to praise the real efforts that they have been making," Boucher said.
The New York Times reported Wednesday that for months Afghan and American officials had complained that even while Pakistan cooperated in the fight against al-Qaeda, militant Islamic groups there were training fighters and sending them into Afghanistan to attack American and Afghan forces.
The newspaper quoted a 17-year-old Pakistani identified as Muhammad Sohail who was captured fighting with the Taliban in southern Afghanistan three months ago. Pakistani officials have rejected the allegations.
However, Boucher dismissed the report.
"It was not a matter of Pakistani support for the activities. Rather, it was a matter of the Pakistani government exposing the activities and talking about what they were doing to stop them in terms of bringing people into custody and eradicating any possiblesources of support of training inside Pakistan," Boucher said.
