WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- US President George W. Bush on Monday offered his "deepest" sympathy and condolences to Paraguay after more than 300 people died in an supermarket fire on the outskirts of the country's capital Asuncion.

"President Bush would like to offer his deepest sympathies and condolences to the people of Paraguay for yesterday's tragic fire," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said in a statement.

"The United States embassy in Asuncion and other United States government agencies are working closely with Paraguayan officials to identify the emergency assistance that we can provide," he said.

Paraguayan President Nicanor Duarte announced late Sunday a three-day national mourning from Monday for the victims in the tragic accident which was being under investigation by the Paraguayan authorities. Enditem
