Federer, Roddick in final showdown at Toronto Masters
www.chinaview.cn 2004-08-01 10:28:49

OTTAWA, July 31 (Xinhuanet) -- World number one Roger Federer takes on defending champion Andy Roddick in a dream final after the top two seeds recorded wins Saturday at the Toronto Masters.

Top seed Federer rallied to knock out unheralded Swede Thomas Johansson 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 earlier in the day before American Roddick beat Germany's Nicolas Kiefer 7-5, 6-3.

Roddick, romping home 6-2, 6-3 in his last meeting with Kiefer in the final in Indianapolis last Sunday, had to deal with a Kiefer giving a better account of himself.

After Kiefer squandered a 40-0 lead with the scores level at 2-2, Roddick went 6-5 up on the strength of four aces before he wrapped up the first set when the German netted.

The American had an easier time in the second set, which he controlled from the start.

Federer started slowly against Johansson, with the 99th-ranked Swede breaking him at the first opportunity and holding serve to take a 2-0 lead.

But the Swiss top seed secured the early break in the second and third sets to clinch the match and his 22nd consecutive victory.

Roddick and Federer were put to the test on Thursday when both competitors had to play twice to make up for a near-washout on Tuesday. Enditem
