COLOMBO, July 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Sri Lankan government is to review its security plan for the capital Colombo following Sunday's massacre of a rival group of the Tamil Tiger rebels, a top government official said Tuesday.

Tilak Ranaviraja, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Law and Order, told reporters that a new security plan would look at measures to prevent infiltration of armed terror gangs into thecity.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels are believedto be responsible for a massacre of eight members belonging to the rival faction led by renegade rebel eastern commander known as Karuna who broke ranks with the mainstream rebel group in March.

The Karuna loyalists were gunned down in a pre-dawn attack in a Colombo suburb on Sunday, forcing the authorities to take a fresh look at security situation in the city.

"We must look at ways to prevent terror groups from coming to the city. But we would not re-impose security road checks as it would lead to the harassment of the public," Ranaviraja said.

Defense Secretary Cyril Herath said that there was no military complicity with the LTTE's renegade leader and he countered the notions of failed intelligence which had led to the massacre.

Ranaviraja emphasized that the government was committed to the ceasefire with the LTTE rebels in spite of incidents such as the Sunday's massacre. Enditem
