US 9/11 allegation part of election campaign: Iran

TEHRAN, July 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Iran on Sunday termed the US allegation that it was involved in the Sept. 11 terror attacks as baseless and part of the presidential election campaign.

"It is just part of the US presidential elections. It is nothing new," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi at a weekly news briefing.

Year 2004 is the US election year, during which presidential candidates from both Republican and Democratic parties would vie for the position.

"Iran has fought seriously against Al-Qaida while some country created it but tried to link it to others," he added.

Asefi played down the assumption that Iran has become the next US attack target, saying "no country dare attack the Islamic Republic of Iran."

This was the third time that Asefi dismissed such US allegations, following the first two on June 18 and 20.

A US Sept. 11 Commission report issued Thursday said that Iran might have facilitated the attacks against the United States by providing some Al-Qaida members with safe transit to and from terrorist training camps in Afghanistan.

Diplomatic relations between Iran and the United States were severed after the Islamic revolution of Iran in 1979.

The United States accused Iran of sponsoring terrorists and seeking nuclear weapons, charges vehemently denied by Tehran.

In return, Iran labelled the United States the enemy of all Islamic countries.  Enditem
