Australia says Philippines, Spain to blame for terrorist threat
www.chinaview.cn 2004-07-25 20:34:30

CANBERRA, July 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Sunday that the Philippines and Spain are to blame for a fresh terrorist treat against Australia.

He was referring to the threat from the Tawhid Islamic Group, which claims itself having link with international terror network Al-Qaeda, last week to turn Australia and Italy into "pools of blood" if they do not pull out troops from Iraq.

Australia has criticized the Philippines and Spain for withdrawing troops from Iraq, saying the two countries have caved in under terrorists' threats.

"Unfortunately, these actions (withdrawals) have encouraged terrorists to continue these threats so now we are subjected," Downer told Nine TV network.

Australia, as a close ally of the United States, has insisted that it will not withdraw its nearly 900 troops in and around Iraq until "the job is done."

On the fresh threat from Tawhid Islamic Group, Downer said although the group "isn't a group that we're familiar with," the government "will take the threat seriously."  Enditem
