ABU DHABI, July 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Angelo de la Cruz, a Filipine hostage who was released Tuesday in Iraq, arrived in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the official WAM news agency reported Wednesday afternoon.

Roy E. Simato, Emissary of Filipine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Raphael Vagis, an under secretary of the Filipine Foreign Ministry also arrived here from Baghdad along with Cruz.

De la Cruz, a Filipine truck driver, was held captive by Iraqi insurgents for nearly two weeks before he was released and handed over to the UAE embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday.

The UAE charge d'affaires Hammed Ahmed al-Shamisi said in a statement on Tuesday that "we were surprised when the Filipine hostage Anglo de la Cruz was released in our embassy.

"The Filipine side agreed with the UAE embassy to transport de laCruz to the Emirates to make medical check-ups.Enditem
