US urged to send no wrong signal to Taiwan
www.chinaview.cn 2004-07-20 13:16:04

BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States should keep the overall Sino-US relations in mind and avoid sending wrong signals to Taiwan's separatist forces, a leading Chinese newspaper said Tuesday.

The US resolution concerning Taiwan passed recently by the US House of Representatives has constituted a wanton intervention in China's internal affairs and sparked strong indignation among the Chinese people, said a signed article carried by the People's Daily.

The resolution, which reiterated the US commitment to the Taiwan Relations Act, fabricates the so-called Chinese military threat and advocates increasing arms sales to Taiwan and upgradingUS-Taiwan military relations, it said.

As known to all, the so-called Taiwan Relations Act, enacted unilaterally by the United States in 1979, is a ridiculous US law which empowers Washington to interfere in other countries' domestic affairs, the article said.

"The enactment of the Taiwan Relations Act demonstrates the US disregard of the United Nations Charter and other international laws, and fully exposes its hegemonic style of placing itself above international norms," it added.

Since then US President Richard Nixon's visit to China in 1972,major principles guiding Sino-US relations have been written into the three Sino-US joint communiques in clear language, the newspaper said.

Under these communiques, Washington agrees that there is only one China and Taiwan is part of the Chinese territory, and it alsopromises to reduce its arms sales to Taiwan and eventually stop selling weapons to Taiwan.

The three Sino-US joint communiques are the political basis forSino-US relations and the leading principles for both sides when handling the Taiwan issue. "Any move that goes against the communiques will harm Sino-US relations," the newspaper said.

The article pointed out that the United States, which overtly has reiterated its adherence to the one-China policy and opposition to "Taiwan independence," actually has been letting loose or even inciting "Taiwan independence" activities.

Recently, the United States has gone even further to stage a series of provocative events, the newspaper said, referring to theUS pushing for Taiwan's permanent observer status in the Organization of American States, among other things.

The newspaper warned that Washington's going stray from the three Sino-US joint communiques will not only hurt Sino-US relations, but also damage the interests of the United States itself.

The Taiwan issue concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the Chinese government and people will never make compromise on the issue. China will never tolerate "Taiwan independence," it said.

The newspaper also urged the United States to keep in mind the development of Sino-US relations and regional peace and stability, abide by the three Sino-US joint communiques and send no wrong signals to Taiwan authorities. Enditem
