| GAZA, July 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli troops opened fire on Wednesday at a crew of United Nations Relief and Working Agency (UNRWA) that intended to deliver food supplies to the residents ofthe besieged northern Gaza Strip village of Beit Hanoun, said alocal UNRWA spokesman.
Adnan Abu Hasna told reporters that UNRWA commissioner General Peter Hansen was leading a convoy of 16 trucks loaded with food supplies to the village when they were attacked by the Israeli troops.
He added that as soon as the UNRWA crew reached al Sekka neighborhood in the village, Israeli troops rained the area with gunfire from heavy machine guns.
The UNRWA crew immediately took refuge into one of the nearby houses in the village, and the Israeli soldiers had opened fire at every direction for about 45 minutes, Abu Hasna said.
He added that the UNRWA crew contacted the Israeli side and asked coordination in order to tell the soldiers to ceasefire for a while to enable the crew leave the house and continue delivering the food supplies.
The Israeli army has been carrying out a large-scaled military operation into Beit Hanoun for three continuous weeks, imposing curfew and besieging the village.
Israel has claimed that the operation into Beit Hanoun was carried out in order to prevent Palestinian militants from launching homemade rockets at southern Israel. Enditem |
