Attempt to smuggle Iraqi antiquities abroad foiled
www.chinaview.cn 2004-07-14 16:45:00

BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhuanet)--The Iraqi border forces have foiled an attempt to smuggle rare Iraqi antiquities to Iran.

ĦĦAn Iraqi border forces official said the Border Forces foiled the biggest smuggling ope ration of Iraqi antiquities after information provided about the intention of some professional smugglers to smuggle 2,000 rare and precious antiquities. CRIENGLISH.com reported Wednesday.

Numerous Iraqi antiquities have been robbed, looted, and smuggled after the toppling of the former regime of Saddam Hussein and the situation deteriorated in the ensuing chaos of the country.

The US-led occupation forces left the antiquity sites and institutions without guarding, which made it easier for thieves to steal antiquities, especially those in the Iraqi National Museum.
