Israel asks US to block UN resolution on barrier
www.chinaview.cn 2004-07-11 12:01:03

JERUSALEM, July 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said Saturday that Israel had asked the United States to veto any resolution by the UN Security Council that declares illegal Israel's barrier in the West Bank.

According to local radio, Shalom said that the Security Council will discuss such a resolution and Palestinians will try to make it pass.

Shalom said that he had spent the past week in the United States, trying to block the resolution.

As a permanent member of the Security Council, the United States can veto a possible resolution.

On Friday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the UN's highest tribunal, ruled that the West Bank barrier being built by the Israeli is illegal and therefore should be dismantled.

After ICJ's ruling, Israeli UN Ambassador Dan Gillerman said that the advisory opinion made by the International Court of Justice ignored terrorism, the main reason for his government to build a wall in the Palestinian territory. Enditem
