Situation in northern Gaza Strip "extremely bad": ICRC
www.chinaview.cn 2004-07-10 21:23:02

GAZA, July 10 (Xinhuanet) -- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Gaza city described on Saturday the situation in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun as "extremely bad" due to the ongoing Israeli military operation.

An ICRC spokesman Eyad Nasser told reporters in Gaza that "the committee is trying to coordinate with the Israel Army to distribute food, potable water and medicine supply in the besieged city."

Nasser described the Israeli military operations in Beit Hanounas "large", saying that the ICRC crews find it almost impossible to assist the town's residents and present their services.

The spokesman, however, said "as much as the committee's efforts are, the sufferings of the town's residents is much bigger."

He promised that "we are attempting to send maintenance workers to establish power and water networks that were demolished by the Israel Army during the operation."

Many Palestinian families residing in Beit Hanoun suffer from aserious lack of food and potable water, he noted, adding at the same time that it is extremely hard to get authorizations from the Israel Army in order to access the town.  Enditem
