EU urges UN to act on ICJ's verdict on Israel's separation wall

ĦĦBRUSSELS, July 9 (Xinhuanet) -- The European Union (EU) Friday urged the United Nations (UN) General Assembly to take actions based on the verdict of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which considered the separation wall Israel is building on the Palestinian territories illegal.

"It will now be up to the General Assembly to decide how to actupon the Court's Advice," said Dutch Foreign Minister Ben Bot in his capacity as the President of the EU Council.

The ICJ's advisory opinion would "need to be studied carefully," said Bot in a written statement.

He added that the EU foreign ministers' meeting due on Monday is expected to discuss the ICJ's verdict.

"While recognizing Israel's right to protect its citizens from terrorist attacks, the EU has demanded that Israel stop and reverse the construction of the Barrier inside the occupied Palestinian Territory, including in and around East Jerusalem," said the statement.

Bot held that Israel's building the wall is "in departure of the armistice line of 1949 and is in contradiction to the relevantprovisions of international law."

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana also made similar comments on the ICJ's ruling.

"The EU, as a Union committed to upholding and developing international law, will examine the Court's opinion with the utmost attention," said Solana in a written comment.

He pointed out that the wall not only results in the "confiscation of Palestinian land" and cause "untold humanitarian and economic hardship", but also "could prejudge future negotiations and hinder a just political solution to the conflict."

Both leaders noted that the EU will remain engaged in the search of a settlement on the Middle East conflict with relevant sides and the "Roadmap" was the sole route to resolving the issue. Enditem
