Accused US army deserter to reunite with family in Jakarta
www.chinaview.cn 2004-07-09 14:47:24

JAKARTA, July 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Alleged US army deserter Charles Robert Jenkins and his two daughters are due to arrive here Friday to reunite with his Japan-born wife Hitomi Soga.

The family reunion is facilitated by the Indonesian government, after Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda received an official request to facilitate the meeting from his Japanese counterpart Yoriko Kawaguchi, according to local media.

Jenkins, 64, and his two daughters are expected to arrive at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 15:00 p.m. local time (08:00 GMT) after a flight from Pyongyang.

Soga already arrived here on Thursday from Tokyo. She was repatriated from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) nearly two years ago after 24 years living in the country.

But Jenkins, who allegedly deserted his unit 40 years ago, refused to accompany his wife in Japan for fear that he would be extradited to the United States.

Indonesia has no extradition treaty with the United States. Wirajuda has repeatedly said the agreement to facilitate the family reunion was based merely on humanitarian reason. Enditem
