GUANGZHOU, July 8 (Xinhuanet) -- There are no cases from an outbreak of bird flu in south China's Guangdong Province this summer, so the daily service for transporting poultry products to Hong Kong and Macao for sale goes on as usual, a local official said Thursday.

Cai Shujian, an official with the animal husbandry office of Guangdong Provincial Agricultural Bureau, confirmed that no new cases of the avian flu have been reported in Guangdong since Feb. 10.

The China national bird flu reference laboratory confirmed on Tuesday that the latest death of chickens in east China's Anhui Province was caused by the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu virus. The case happened at a chicken farm of the Juchao District, Chaohu City, east Anhui Province.

Having learned the news, the provincial government worked out aplan urging Guangdong Provincial Headquarters for Control of Highly Pathogenic Avian Flu and other relevant department at lower levels to make persistent efforts in carrying out measures calculated for prevention and treatment of bird flu.

"At present, there are plenty of vaccines in the province and we will continue to do a good job of preventing poultry from bird flu infection," said Cai, who is also in charge of the Office with Guangdong Provincial Headquarters for Control of Highly Pathogenic Avian Flu.

Professor Xin Chao'an with South China University of Agricultural Sciences, said that because of the hot weather with high temperature in Guangdong, it is unlikely for an outbreak of the bird flu in the province.

Guangdong Province is not the last one to act. Shanghai City has also drafted measures in order to prevent a comeback of the avian epidemic.

Jiao Yang, spokesman for the municipal government, said the government would pay equal emphasis to vaccination and monitoring to prevent the outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian disease, and to increased checkups at highway crossings and borders sharing with other areas in order to prevent the avian flu from entering the city.

"We will not ban trading at the live poultry market that just resumed operation, but we will step up market quarantine and supervision," said Jiao Yang. Enditem
