Yudhoyono enjoys cross-party support in Indonesian election

JAKARTA, July 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Indonesian presidential candidate Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono now tops the provisional vote tally with voters coming from nearly all parties, a survey indicated Wednesday.

A large part of Yudhoyono's supporters have come from Indonesia's largest party Golkar and two Muslim-based parties: the National Awakening Party (PKB) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), according to a survey conducted by the Jakarta-based Institute for Research, Education and Economic and Social Studies (LP3ES).

The survey indicated Yudhoyono wins supports from 31 percent of supporters of the ruling party Golkar, 24 percent of PKS and 28 percent of PKB.

LP3ES said that the research was conducted during the July 5 election, involving around 4,500 voters at 1,719 polling stations across the country.

Golkar has officially nominated retired general Wiranto as its presidential candidate and won support from PKB. But Wiranto now trailed behind Yudhoyono and incumbent President Megawati Soekarnoputri in the provisional vote tally as of Wednesday.

If no candidate emerges with an outright majority in the first round, and it is most likely no one will do, only two frontrunners will advance to the second round on Sep. 20.  Enditem
