CAIRO, July 6 (Xinhuanet) -- The Sudanese government has decided to lift the restriction on providing humanitarian aid to the country's Darfur region and will take measures to restore law and order there, according to reports reaching here from the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.
The government will also provide convenience to the rescue teams to ensure the humanitarian aid goes to the refugees, said Interior Minister Abdel Hussein in a statement Tuesday.
In addition, 6,000 police forces will be deployed to the Darfur region in western Sudan to help settle the crisis there, Hussein added.
Following stern warnings to Khartoum from the international community, the Sudan has recently announced steps to ease the situation in Darfur.
Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Ismail said that "we will do our best to bring more police and more armed forces to that area. We will combat any militia or Janjawid to protect civilians."
A revolt against the Arab-dominated Sudanese government broke out among indigenous ethnic minorities in Darfur in February 2003.Pro-government Arab militias there were blamed for a wave of killings of indigenous groups.
More than 10,000 people have been killed in the region and morethan 1 million others have been driven from their homes since then,it was reported. Enditem |
