Iran to file indictment against Saddam
www.chinaview.cn 2004-07-07 06:33:30

TEHRAN, July 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Iranian Judiciary General Hashemi Shahroudi assigned Tuesday a prosecutor general to draw up indictment against former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein for his war crimes against Iran, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"Iran believes that Saddam's historical crime of imposing eight years of war on Iranian nation (1980-1988) should top the series ofcharges brought against him," Shahroudi was quoted as saying.

The indictment would be forwarded to the Iraqi special tribunal in charge of Saddam's trial, IRNA said.

Iranian Foreign Ministry criticized on Sunday that the court trying Saddam failed to count in the ousted-president's attack on Iran, which triggered the 1980-1988 war between the two countries.

Also on Tuesday, over 200 Iranian parliament members said in a statement that the Hague-based International Court of Justice should take charge of Saddam's trial.

Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that the Islamic republic would submit a complaint against Saddam on the war he launched upon Iran and the use of chemical weapons.

The trial against Saddam started last Thursday in Baghdad, with seven charges against humanity leveled. Enditem
