GAZA, July 6
(Xinhuanet) -- The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) hoped that the visit of
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed El Baradei to Israel
would make the Middle East region free of weapons of mass destruction
(WMD).
Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat
told reporters Tuesday that the PNA hoped that Baradei's visit would convince
Israel to reveal its nuclear programs.
"Israel is not a
state above the law and all the people in the region must exert efforts to free
the region from WMDs to secure the future of the coming generations," he
said.
Baradei is due to arrive in Israel later in the day,
which will be his third visit to Israel since he was appointed as the IAEA chief
in December 1997.
During his stay in Israel, Baradei will
meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Health Minister Danny Naveh.
But he is not scheduled to visit Israel's top secret nuclear reactor in the
desert town of Dimona, which was inaugurated in 1965.
Sharon
said Tuesday just hours before Baradei's visit that Israel would not change its
"no show, now tell" nuclear policy.
Up to now, Israel is the sole known nuclear power in the Middle East. Enditem |
