GAZA, July 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli troops stationed on the borderline between the southern Gaza town of Rafah and Egypt shot dead on Sunday night a Palestinian said to be a police officer, Palestinian medics and witnesses said.

Palestinian witnesses in Rafah said that the soldiers had suddenly opened intensive gunfire from heavy machineguns at the Palestinian residents' houses, adding that severe damages were caused to the houses.

Medical sources said that Ref'at Abu A'mra, 27, a Palestinian general security officer, was shot dead as he was about 500 meters away from the borderline where the soldiers were opening fire.

The number of Palestinians killed within the last 24 hours raised to 9 in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, 7 are from the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli army had escalated its military actions in the Gaza Strip after Palestinian militants carried out a bombing attack against an Israeli army post in central Gaza Strip and after militants fired several Qassam homemade-rockets at southern Israel. Two Israelis were killed in both attacks.
