Famous British actress tours Gaza refugee camps

GAZA, July 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Representatives of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) are due to convene on Saturday with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat at the end of a visit by a famous British actress to the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Vanessa Redgrave, who is a UNICEF representative, started her visit to the territories two weeks ago, during which she toured a number of densely populated refugee camps and was briefed on the refugees' living conditions.

Redgrave is known for her supporting position to the Palestinians and launching a vaccine campaign for around 540,000 children living in the Gaza Strip.

She was due to visit the southern Gaza Strip city and refugee camps of Rafah to meet around 15,000 homeless Palestinian people, but the visit was annulled because of the Israeli military closures imposed on the strip.

Redgrave, meanwhile, called on the international community to increase its urgent contributions and donations to Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

She also appealed to Israel to alleviate the sanctions imposed on the movements of Palestinians and United Nations staffs, adding that the Palestinian refugees live in extremely harsh conditions.  Enditem
