Sharon says separation wall to be rerouted
www.chinaview.cn 2004-07-02 06:40:24

JERUSALEM, July 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on Thursday that a new route would be formulated for the West Bank separation wall section near Jerusalem in order to adhere to a ruling from High Court of Justice.

Sharon said that in areas where there are no legal problems with the route, construction work should begin "immediately, at full speed."

He continued that "in areas where we cannot compromise on security, don't make concessions. But in places where we can, we need to do as little damage as possible to the Palestinians' way of life, and we can move (the fence) a little closer to the Green Line."

Sharon met Thursday with Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, Justice Minister Yosef Lapid, Attorney General Menachem Mazuz and other legal and security officials, to discuss the ruling's ramifications on the section of the fence near Jerusalem and on other sections.

During the meeting, Lapid suggested that the justice and defense ministries better coordinate decisions and actions in an effort to prevent future clashes with the legal authorities.

Israeli High Court of Justice on Wednesday ordered to reroute some 30 kilometers of West Bank separation wall near Jerusalem in order to reduce the hardship to Palestinians.

The Court on Thursday also issued a temporary restraining order freezing the construction on the south of Jerusalem section of the wall. Enditem
