Israel says to reroute part of separation wall

กก   JERUSALEM, June 30 (Xinhuanet) -- The Israeli Defense Ministry said Wednesday it would reroute part of the West Bank separation wall after the country's High Court of Justice ordered changes to 30 kilometers of the route near Jerusalem.

"The replanning of these sections will be based on the principles set by the High Court, namely the proper balance between security and humanitarian considerations," the Ministry said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, the court said in its ruling that the current path violated the rights of tens of thousands of Palestinians living near Jerusalem and their freedom of movement.

The judgement, issued in response to a petition filed by residents and human rights groups, means that modifications will have to be made to a 30-km stretch of the barrier to the north and west of Jerusalem.

The Israeli army was ordered to prepare a new alignment for the wall, which might provide less security but would increase the life quality for Palestinians in the area.

Mohammed Dahla, lawyer for the petitioners, regarded the ruling of the court as "a courageous and very important decision."

But an Israeli security official condemned the ruling, saying that the decision would "cause irreversible damage." The ruling came 10 days before an expected July 9 advisory decision by the International Court of Justice, which was asked by the United Nations to examine the legality of the separation wall.
