High protein diet may affect female fertility
www.chinaview.cn 2004-06-29 11:07:23

BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhuanet) -- US scientists warn that eating a high protein diet may make it more difficult for women to conceive.

ˇˇResearchers say diets containing 25 percent protein disrupt the development of early mice embryos and may have a similar impact in humans, CRIENGLISH.com reported Tuesday.

In mice, the high protein diet seems to interfere with a genetic process known as imprinting, which controls the activity of genes inherited from the father and mother.

Researchers say only 35 percent of early embryos developed in mothers on a 25 percent protein diet showed a normal imprinting pattern, compared to 70 percent in their lower protein control group.

And fewer embryos in the high protein group developed into foetuses -- 65 percent compared to 81 percent in the control group.
