OTTAWA, June 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Lightning strikes sparked more than a dozen new forest fires in Canada's western province of British Columbia on Saturday, bringing the number of forest fires to nearly 400 in the province, local media reported on Sunday.
In north-central region of the province, more than 200 firefighters were battling a rapidly expanding blaze south of Vanderhoof, which grew from 60 to 85 square kilometers overnight, according to the reports.
The largest fire in the province occurred in the remote Swan Lake in the north. Fanned by high winds, it now covers about 100 square kilometers. Enditem |
