MADRID, June 24 (Xinhuanet) -- The Spanish government said Thursday that it will decide soon whether to dispatch troops to Afghanistan and Haiti, even though the country's forces deployed in Iraq have already been withdrawn.
First Vice Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said that the Spanish commitment to the international peace and solidarity "is absolute."
The allies urged Spain to send soldiers to Afghanistan and Haiti to join the UN missions there, she explained.
Following two attacks against UN electoral authorities on June 21, the United Nations urged NATO to send more troops to Afghanistan to bolster security ahead of elections in September.
Meanwhile, de la Vega also made clear that pulling the troops out of Iraq was "absolutely correct" and did not imply a lack of commitment to the international peace missions.
"We are under the resolutions of the United Nations and within international legality," she added.
The government of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who won an election victory in April, ordered the withdrawal of Spanish troops deployed in Iraq, after which Honduras and Dominicaalso pulled their soldiers out of the Gulf country. Enditem |
