KABUL, June 23 (Xinhuanet)-- Five persons including two US soldiers were wounded as unknown persons pounded a US base in southeast Afghanistan, military spokesman said Wednesday.

"About seven rocket propelled grenades were launched at Solernoforward base yesterday and at least two struck inside the warehouse which resulted in two coalitions wounds and three civilian interpreters were wounded," Tucker Mansager told journalists at a news briefing here.

Solerno in southeast Khost province 200 km away from here has been the scene of frequent skirmishes between suspected Taliban and US troops for the last several months.

Counting this latest casualty, the number of US soldiers got wounded in action in less than a week reaches four.

Earlier on Friday two American soldiers were injured in southeast Afghanistan and another one died mysteriously in a non-hostile injury Sunday night at his base in Bagram 50 km north of Kabul.

"All those were wounded in yesterday's attack have already returned to duty," the US military spokesperson added.

Remnants of the Taliban whose regime was ousted by US invasion in late 2001 have stepped up their hit-and-run operations against the US-led foreign troops and Afghan army in south, southeast and east Afghanistan since early May in which over 150 persons including 80 Taliban and 10 US soldiers have been killed.

Taliban's elusive leader Mullah Mohammad Omar who has announcedJihad or holy war against the US-dominated foreign force said his supporters would continue guerrilla warfare until the US leaves Afghanistan. Enditem
