BUENOS AIRES, June 17 (Xinhuanet) -- The Argentine Chamber of Deputies on
Thursday approved the deployment of about 600 troops to the war-torn Caribbean
island country of Haiti.
The debate on the deployment lasted over seven hours and the mission
finally was approved with 138 votes in favor and 75 against, with no abstention.
The Argentine contingent to Haiti will be led by a Brazilian general, whose
country will send 1,200 men to the capital Port-au-Prince.
The contingent will be formed by soldiers from the army, the marine
infantry and the air force. The army soldiers are apparently parachuters from
the landlocked province of Cordoba.
The whole deployment will require 14 assembling containers and 18 flights
of Hercules transport airplanes and take 35 days.
The Argentine forces will install in Haiti a movable hospital and the
personnel will include elements that had participated in peacekeeping missions
in Mozambique (1993-1995) and Kosovo (2000).Enditem |
