KABUL, June 12 (Xinhuanet) -- The military commander of northeastern Afghanistan said that probably 14 gunmen were involved in the terror attacks early Thursday morning that killed 11 Chinese construction workers and wounded four others in Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan.
In an exclusive interview with Xinhua on Saturday, Lieutenant General Daoud disclosed that a new terrorist network was found involved in the attacks that planned the brutal killings. However,he said he could not give any details as the investigation was still going on.
"So far four suspects have been arrested and they are from Baghlan Province," he said. "These people in the past belonged to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar' s party, and they later joined the Taliban."
"They came by two vehicles and escaped after the attacks," he said.
Some 3,000 people in Taliban city, the capital of Takhar that neighboring Kunduz province, took part in a demonstration here Saturday to show their support to the Chinese and condemn the attackers' terrorist activities. "Tomorrow Kunduz people will alsohold a rally to show their support to the Chinese and ask them to continue their work here," he said.
So far there are about 400 Chinese workers working in Afghanistan to help the country with road and irrigation projects.
Chinese President Hu Jintao, who was in Poland for a state visit on Thursday, strongly condemned the terror attacks against Chinese workers and urged the Afghan government and the UN missionin the country to investigate the incident, bring the terrorists to justice, and ensure safety and security of other Chinese citizens in Afghanistan.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai Friday condemned the bloody attack on the Chinese workers, saying the attack "is the work of the enemies of Afghanistan who want to derail the process of national reconstruction in Afghanistan and this will not be tolerated."
General Daoud said more soldiers, as many as the Chinese need, would be sent to ensure the construction workers' safety and security.
"Right now we have solved the Chinese workers' simple problems like water and accommodation," he said.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said Friday that China, while strongly condemning the terrorist activities, would not surrender to terrorism in any forms and would continue to participate in the reconstruction process of Afghanistan. Enditem |
